Provisional: Krzysztof Pastor’s ballet, with music by Wojciech Kilar, at Theater Dortmund. The world’s most famous horror story takes the ballet stage: Krzysztof Pastor’s spectacular choreography of Dracula, which premiered in 2018 with the West Australian Ballet, was enthusiastically acclaimed and has won numerous awards, bringing Bram Stoker’s iconic character to life in an opulent, emotionally charged dance production. The haunting music of Wojciech Kilar – world-renowned from Francis Ford Coppola’s Oscar-winning film Bram Stoker’s Dracula – forms the pulsating heart of this extraordinary production, expanded to include additional compositions by the Polish master. Based on the novel, Krzysztof Pastor tells the story of a man scarred by the loss of his great love. Once a brave warrior, the aristocratic count is plunged into a curse by his wife’s tragic suicide, condemning him to become a vampire. Centuries later, redemption seems within reach when he meets Mina – a young woman who bears a striking resemblance to his late wife and reawakens in him the hope of liberation. Amid dark passion, ominous seduction, and deeply felt love, an emotionally charged drama unfolds, culminating in a sacrifice that could not be greater. With breathtaking imagery, gripping scenes, and an atmospheric, rich musical world, Pastor’s neoclassical ballet transports its audience into the mysterious realms of vampires. Through emotional pas de deux and sweeping group scenes, Pastor tells a story of immortal love, dark desires, and the power of redemption – captivating, sensual, and of timeless power. Dracula, an extraordinary ballet experience brimming with suspense, beauty, and goosebumps, now comes to life once again in Dortmund in its original version, featuring the West Australian Ballet’s set design. A must-see for anyone who wants to be swept away by great stories and virtuoso dance. A co-production of the West Australian Ballet and Queensland Ballet.
