Bram Stoker and Dracula in Whitby
Follow a route between Bram’s holiday landscape and places used in the novel. His actual movements and a fictional character’s route are different kinds of evidence.
This is a self-guided reading route. Check opening, transport and accessibility with each operator, use public paths and crossings, and respect private homes. Stops may be omitted or visited separately.
1. 6 Royal Crescent
Start on the West Cliff at the exterior of Bram’s 1890 lodging house. It is private property.
2. West Cliff and harbour
Look across to the East Cliff, then use public streets to reach the harbour. Choose an accessible route for your group.
3. Pier Road
Locate the historical Museum and Subscription Library area. The present Museum is in Pannett Park.
4. St Mary’s churchyard
Cross the bridge and approach the churchyard. The 199 Steps are steep; consider an alternative approach if needed.
5. Whitby Abbey
End at the Abbey visitor site, subject to its opening and admission. Read the Whitby chapters alongside the landscape.
