Gibbet Hill

In October 2024 the National Library of Ireland announced the rediscovery of Gibbet Hill, a story by Bram Stoker published in an 1890 Christmas supplement of the Daily Express, Dublin edition.

Finding a forgotten story

Researcher Brian Cleary found the story while exploring the Library’s newspaper collections. It was absent from established Stoker bibliographies. The discovery shows how an institution’s collections and a reader’s close attention can bring unfamiliar writing back into view.

Read the original

The NLI’s announcement links to a digital copy of the newspaper supplement. It lets readers encounter the original publication rather than only a modern account of the discovery.

A new publication

A subsequent book brought together the story, Cleary’s account of finding it, commentary by biographer Paul Murray and paintings by Paul McKinley. Its proceeds supported the Rotunda Foundation’s Charlotte Stoker Fund for research on preventing acquired deafness in vulnerable newborn babies.
