Albemarle Street — Arthur’s anxious letter

Arthur Holmwood writes from the Albemarle Hotel on 31 August, asking Dr Seward to help Lucy. This Chapter 9 letter begins the chain that brings Van Helsing into her care.

Read the letter as a moment of uncertainty: Arthur can see Lucy fading, but cannot explain why. The hotel links the fashionable West End with the sickroom in the north of London.

An 1883 London Gazette notice places the Albemarle Hotel at No. 1 Albemarle Street, Piccadilly. Westminster Archives also catalogues an early-twentieth-century view showing Hotel Albemarle at this junction. These support the street location; they do not identify Arthur’s fictional room.
